I’ve just received some exciting news. Last year I spent time helping the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) put together a series of public service announcements raising awareness of how American Indians and Alaska Natives are twice as likely to have diagnosed diabetes as non-Hispanic whites.
I just learned from the producers of the PSA that since it was posted on Feb. 5, for all US commercial broadcast stations to use, the total Nielsen audience for the spot sky-rocketed to 11,843,824 viewers and 6,215 airings to-date, along with an additional 12,174 page views on the CDC-TV page and CDC’s YouTube page.
The producer told me the CDC’s media relations company thinks this is a record and the TV spots may reach Nielsen audience views of somewhere between 15 and 20 million this year. They tell me this is unheard of for an “earned media” PSA since stations air at their discretion as opposed to expensive purchased airtime.
This is amazing and very encouraging. The health of our native populations is vital. Like I say in the spot, “our people and cultures hold the answers. Our cultures are our source of health.”
We can return to a healthy balance by gathering, planting and eating traditional foods and playing traditional games. Through focusing on this healthy way of living we can promote better health and prevent diseases like Type 2 diabetes.
