The first time I acted was on stage in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a place called the American Indian Theatre Company. It was 1983. While I won’t go into my probably less than honorable reasons for joining the company, the result was I discovered a new passion. I loved the rush of being on stage and I found a real outlet for feelings that there was really no other healthy way to express.
I did quite a bit of work there, performing in my first paid performance, “Black Elk Speaks,” before moving on to other companies and eventually onto TV and the movies.
This weekend I’m returning to Tulsa as the Tulsa Awards for Theatre Excellence (TATE) are honoring me with the 2013 Distinguished Artist Award. If you’re around, please plan on attending.
The event is June 23, at the Cascia Hall PAC, 2525 S. Yorktown Ave. The evening starts with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session with yours truly and then the awards presentation. There are several other awards too. You can learn about them all and get tickets here.
I hope to see you there!
